If you have never dived before, this is the experience for you! Join our instructors on a day trip out into the Bay of Islands to discover the underwater world.
This is an all-day scuba diving trip. We depart Paihia at 8:30am and cruise through the beautiful Bay of Islands. We then moor at the wreck for the certified divers to dive. While they are down, we will go through the SSI digital training materials and brief you on the dive procedures. As an added benefit of the SSI system, you will have free, lifetime access to these digital course materials through the MySSI app. Then it’s your turn! We move to a shallow reef site, gear up, and enter the water. We will guide you through some basic skills to get you comfortable with breathing underwater, using SSI’s flexible, instructor-led approach that adapts to your learning style. Once you are comfortable, we will descend to a maximum depth of 12 meters to take you for a tour of the underwater marine life.
After the dive you have time for some lunch and then some snorkelling. If you loved the dive you also have the opportunity to go for another dive for a small fee.
We then return through the islands to Paihia. We normally return by 4:00pm

Common questions
Do I need any experience?
None at all. An Intro Dive is for people who have never breathed underwater before. You dive with one of our instructors alongside you the whole time, and the $389 includes all your gear.
What is the minimum age?
Ten years old. Anyone under 18 needs an adult with them.
Do I need a medical or any paperwork?
Everyone completes an Understanding The Risks form before joining a trip. Because an Intro Dive is dive training, have a look at the medical form first — depending on your answers you may need your doctor to sign you off as fit to dive before the day.
How cold is it, and what will I wear?
Sea temperature runs from about 16°C in late winter up to about 22°C in February. Below 18°C we put you in a 7mm one-piece with a hooded vest, boots and gloves. Above 18°C it is the same 7mm suit, with the hood and gloves optional. In high summer at around 22°C a 5mm is plenty. All of it is included in the price of your Intro Dive.
What is the visibility like?
It changes through the year. Autumn is usually the best of it — 15 to 30 metres and sometimes more. Winter sits around 15 metres and is reliable. Summer swings the most, anywhere from 8 metres to over 20. Spring is the least dependable, averaging 8 to 12 metres and occasionally dropping to 5.
How deep will I go?
An Intro Dive stays shallow and within your comfort. Your instructor sets the pace and stays with you throughout. If you enjoy it, a second dive on the same day is $95.
What happens if the weather turns?
We usually make the call the day before, off the lunchtime forecast. If a bigger system is on its way we generally know a few days out, and occasionally it changes overnight and we have to call it in the morning. If we cancel for weather, you get a full refund. Leave the decision to us rather than calling it off yourself — a day that looks rough on a forecast app is often fine on the water.
Can my partner come along if they do not dive?
Yes. A snorkeller or passenger place is $240 including all gear, or $190 for a child aged 6 to 14. They get the same day on the water, the same islands on the way out, and the lunch stop while the divers are down.

Freediving opens up a whole new underwater world. The Freediver course takes 2 days to complete, the first day starts in the class reviewing the theory completed online and then we head to the pool for the confined water session. The 2nd day is out on our boat Sentinel in Deep Water Cove putting to practice the skills learned in the pool and depth training.
