SSI Stress and Rescue Course

FROM $749

“Challenging” and “rewarding” are the perfect words to describe the SSI Stress and Rescue course. This program takes what you’ve already learned and expands on your knowledge of how to prevent problems and effectively manage them should they occur.

The Fun Part

The most rewarding part of this course is learning to recognise and respond to diver stress. You’ll rise to challenges and master the skills needed to help others in need. Many divers say this is the best course they have ever taken because it makes them a more confident and prepared buddy.

What You Learn

  • Self rescue techniques
  • Recognizing and managing stress in other divers
  • Emergency management and equipment
  • In-water rescue skills to assist panicked or unresponsive divers
  • Proper accident management and first aid protocols

Course Structure

This course is typically completed over three days.
  • Day one is dedicated to theory and an introduction to the concepts. We also head to the pool to do some confined water training.
  • Day two involves practical application at a confined water site, like a beach, where you’ll practice rescue techniques and drills.
  • Day three is the big finale! You’ll head out on the boat to apply your skills in realistic, open-water scenarios, putting everything you’ve learned to the test.
  • After completing this course, you’ll be awarded the SSI Stress and Rescue specialty certification, a crucial step in becoming a more responsible and skilled diver.

Prerequisites

To enroll in the Stress and Rescue course, you must:

  • Be 12 years or older
  • Have an Open Water certification

Common questions

What do I need before I start?

You need to be at least 12, hold an Open Water certification, and have first aid and CPR training from within the last two years.

I don’t have current first aid training. Can you help?

Yes. We run an SSI React Right first aid and CPR course in one day before your Stress and Rescue course. It costs $200.

How long does it take?

Usually three days: theory and a pool session on day one, rescue practice at a sheltered shore site on day two, and scenarios from the boat on day three.

What will I learn?

Self-rescue, recognising and managing stress in other divers, emergency equipment and procedures, and in-water rescues of panicked or unresponsive divers.

Is gear included?

The course is from $749. If you need to hire gear, it’s an extra $100 for the course.

Why do people say it’s their favourite course?

It makes you a far more confident and useful buddy. It’s challenging, but most divers finish it feeling far more in control.
